É encontrada no Atlântico Nordeste e Mar Mediterrâneo.
Habita na coluna de água em zonas costeiras até 250 m de profundidade. Forma grandes cardumes que são fortemente migradores, permanecendo junto ao fundo durante o dia e subindo durante a noite para caçar peixes, moluscos e pequenos crustáceos. Reproduz-se de Fevereiro a Abril, momento em que a fêmea desova 100.000 a 400.000 óvulos

Tamanho mínimo de captura – 200 mm.
É pescada com cerco, arrasto e redes de emalhar.
