Descrição

Esta esponja mede até 5 cm e às vezes forma grupos, é tubular e tem cor amarela cremosa e um aspeto delicado.

A circulação de água necessária para alimentação e oxigenação é feita a partir dos muitos poros inalantes dispostos na periferia do corpo, em direção ao sifão exalante superior ou ósculo.

Espinhos semelhantes a agulhas (chamados espículas) cobrem o seu corpo, as espículas que se encontram ao redor da abertura do ósculo são maiores que as da base do corpo.

Distribuição geográfica

Do Ártico até Gibraltar.

Habitat

Habitat – ocorre principalmente em regiões temperadas. Ocorre desde a zona intertidal até as profundidades sublitorais, raramente a mais de 150m de profundidade.

Alimentação – obtém o alimento filtrando a água através dos coanócitos.

Reprodução – predomina a reprodução sexuada, que ocorre entre julho e agosto. O desenvolvimento das larvas ocorre dentro da esponja principal, até ao momento em que são libertadas no mar.

Características identificativas

  • Tubular, simples ou em grupos;
  • Pode atingir até 5 cm de altura e 7,5 mm de largura;
  • Coloração num tom amarelo cremoso;
  • Um grande ósculo terminal rodeado por uma coroa de espículas.
