Descrição

Espécie de um corpo mole formado por dois lóbulos simétricos e o manto do qual sobressai o pé, uma concha oval de cor negra, onde se podem agarrar outros organismos.

 

Distribuição geográfica

É encontrado no Atlântico Nordeste e costa portuguesa, em estuários e habitats oceânicos, habitando zonas rochosas entre marés, até aos 10 m de profundidade. Alimenta-se de matéria em suspensão e fitoplâncton através de filtração. A reprodução é sazonal e as posturas ocorrem na Primavera e Verão tardio, em resposta ao aumento da temperatura e salinidade da água, assim como ao aumento do alimento disponível.

É capturado à mão (apanha). É também produzido por aquicultura em mar aberto, tendo sido feito um forte investimento neste sector económico.
