Descrição

Corpo alongado; primeira barbatana dorsal com 14 a 16 espinhos; dorso escuro e azul púrpura, flancos e ventre prateados; com 4 a 6 listas longitudinais escuras nos flancos, que em espécimes vivos, podem apresentar-se como linhas descontínuas de manchas escuras. Longevidade estimada entre 6 e 8 anos.

Distribuição geográfica

Espécie cosmopolita em mares tropicais e subtropicais.

Habitat

Espécie pelágica e oceanódroma de alto mar, a profundidades de 260m, em águas mornas e quentes a temperadas.

Ecologia

Alimenta-se de peixes, crustáceos, cefalópodes e moluscos; o canibalismo é comum.

Desova o ano todo em águas tropicais, na costa do norte da África desova de abril a setembro.
