Descrição

Esponja que apresenta um corpo basal (em forma de almofada) geralmente coberto com sedimento, do qual partem prolongações cónicas com cerca de 2-3 cm de altura. A superfície tem uma aparência vítrea e translúcida, através da qual é possível observar fibras verticais. Os ósculos localizam-se no topo de algumas das prolongações. Apresenta uma consistência firme e moderadamente elástica. Coloração beige, por vezes um pouco amarelada.

Distribuição geográfica

Esta espécie tem uma ampla distribuição no Nordeste Atlântico e Mediterrâneo.

Habitat

Ocorre normalmente em superfícies horizontais de habitats rochosos a mistos, no sublitoral superior, entre os 5-25 m de profundidade. Também ocorre em grutas submarinas.

Características identificativas

A sua morfologia é muito distintiva, sendo por isso difícil de confundir com outras espécies.
