Habitat

Pato de hábitos marinhos que frequenta águas costeiras pouco profundas com substratos arenosos. No litoral norte de Portugal Continental é um invernante e migrador de passagem comum. Em condições climatéricas adversas alguns indivíduos, sobretudo combalidos, podem abrigar-se no estuário do Cávado.

Características identificativas

Pato gregário de tamanho médio. O macho adulto apresenta a plumagem toda negra em que se destaca a cor amarela no centro do bico. As fêmeas e os imaturos têm “bochechas” claras”
