Possui barbatanas peitorais muito longas, ultrapassando o nível da segunda dorsal; dorso azul metálico escuro, parte inferior do flanco e ventre esbranquiçados; em espécimes vivos uma faixa lateral azul iridescente ténue ao longo dos flancos; primeira barbatana dorsal de cor amarela mais escura e segunda dorsal e anal de amarelo mais claro; pínulas anais escuras; margem posterior da barbatana caudal branca. Comprimento máximo de aproximadamente 127cm, correspondente a um peso de 40 kg. O comprimento mais comum situa-se entre os 40 e 100 cm. Longevidade de 13 anos no Atlântico e de 9 anos no Mediterrâneo.
Espécie cosmopolita em águas tropicais e temperadas de todos os oceanos, incluindo o Mar Mediterrâneo.
Espécie epipelágica e mesopelágica, abundante em águas superficiais cuja temperatura varia entre 15,6 ° a 19,4°C, a profundidades entre 0 a 600m. Espécie altamente migratória.
Alimenta-se de peixes, crustáceos e lulas.
