Descrição

É mais corpulento do que a maioria dos golfinhos; tem uma grande cabeça romba, sem bico e apresenta um vinco característico na sua testa, desde o orifício até ao lábio superior; apresenta coloração predominantemente cinzenta, que se vai tornando cada vez mais clara com a idade pela presença de cicatrizes brancas a cobrir quase todo o corpo; as barbatanas peitorais são longas e em forma de foice e a dorsal é alta, ereta e ligeiramente angular; não possui dentes no maxilar superior, mas possui de 2 a 7 pares de dentes pontiagudos na mandíbula; a sua longevidade é de cerca de 30 anos.

Distribuição geográfica

Apresenta uma ampla distribuição. Encontram-se em águas temperadas, subtropicais e tropicais por todos os oceanos.

No Continente, ocorre ao longo de toda a plataforma continental podendo, ocasionalmente, ser avistado em zonas costeiras de menor profundidade.

Pode ser avistado em toda a área das Zonas Económicas Exclusivas dos Açores e da Madeira, especialmente junto às ilhas e bancos submarinos.

Habitat

Animal pelágico, com preferência por encostas íngremes, variando de 400 a 1.200 metros de profundidade. É frequentemente visto perto dos limites das plataformas continentais, ou perto de montanhas submarinas e canhões submarinos.

 

Ecologia

Alimenta-se de peixes, crustáceos e cefalópodes, preferencialmente a lula. Alimenta-se preferencialmente durante a noite.

Os nascimentos ocorrem durante todo o ano, mas atingem o pico durante o verão (Atlântico Norte) e o inverno (Pacífico Leste). O período de gestação é de 13 a 14 meses e o período de amamentação é de 12 a 18 meses.

Características identificativas

  • Os adultos atingem em média os 3m e os 400Kg de peso;
  • Apresenta coloração predominantemente cinzenta, que se vai tornando cada vez mais clara com a idade;
  • As barbatanas peitorais são longas e em forma de foice e a dorsal é alta, ereta e ligeiramente angular;
  • Não apresenta bico proeminente;
  • A cabeça é arredondada.
