Apresenta um corpo fusiforme; barbatanas dorsais altas, as peitorais são longas e estreitas e possui um bico proeminente; apresenta coloração cinza-azulada com uma capa dorsal escura e coloração ventral clara (geralmente branca); o seu comprimento pode atingir os 2,6m de comprimento; os machos são ligeiramente maiores que as fêmeas; o peso máximo é de cerca de 156 kg; a sua longevidade pode variar entre os 35 e os 50 anos.
Espécie com uma ampla distribuição, encontra-se em águas tropicais e quentes a temperadas dos oceanos Atlântico, Pacífico e Índico, bem como em muitos mares adjacentes, incluindo o Mediterrâneo.
Ocorre em zonas de mar aberto, habita águas profundas onde ocorrem grandes variações sazonais de temperatura.
Alimenta-se principalmente de cefalópodes, crustáceos e peixes ósseos. Os golfinhos listrados do Mediterrâneo alimentam-se principalmente de cefalópodes, enquanto os golfinhos do Atlântico Nordeste se alimentam preferencialmente de peixes.
A época de acasalamento varia, no Mediterrâneo é durante o outono, mas no Pacífico Norte é durante o inverno e início do verão. O período de gestação dura cerca de 12 a 13 meses e o de amamentação é de cerca de 16 meses.
Os machos atingem a maturidade sexual entre os 7 e os 15 anos e as fêmeas entre os 5 e os 13 anos de idade.
