Corpo alongado, de secção subcilíndrica; lábio superior espesso; espaço jugular muito reduzido; nos adultos, o dorso é escuro, esverdeado, acinzentado ou azulado; flancos cinza prateados com 6 a 8 listas cinzentas longitudinais; as listas na parte dorsal dos flancos são mais escuras e mais visíveis do que as da parte ventral; barbatanas dorsais e anal escuras, mas a anal menos pigmentada do que as dorsais; barbatanas peitorais claras com base escura; a barbatana caudal é grande e bifurcada; mede em média cerca de 35 cm de comprimento, podendo atingir os 75 cm de comprimento.
Atlântico Nordeste, desde a Islândia até ao Senegal e Cabo Verde, mares Mediterrâneo e Negro.
Espécie pelágica, geralmente na zona de costa, podendo ser encontrada em estuários, lagoas e por vezes locais de vazamento dos esgotos; tende a deslocar-se para norte no verão, à medida que as temperaturas aumentam.
Os juvenis alimentam-se de zooplâncton e os adultos de diatomáceas bentónicas, algas, pequenos invertebrados e detritos.
Reproduz-se no mar durante os meses de inverno.
